Community projects receive £3.5 million from Climate Challenge Fund

The funding has been awarded to projects that are designed to help tackle climate change by reducing local communities' carbon footprints in imaginative ways, and through inspiring others to follow suit. The 37 projects that have received funding will collectively reduce Scotland’s carbon emissions by over 250,000 tonnes - the equivalent of taking over 83,000 cars off the road.

Green MSP Patrick Harvie said:

"I'd like to heartily congratulate all of the projects that have received an award from the Climate Challenge Fund. They are amongst a growing number of communities across Scotland that are proving to be this country's best source of innovation on tackling climate change. “The people behind these projects are true climate pioneers, doing work we can all be proud of. If Scotland is to meet the 42% carbon reduction targets Parliament set last month, we will need to scale up projects like these and learn from their experiences. "What's particularly satisfying is to see projects coming forward that are designed to go beyond tackling climate change, by boosting local employment, supporting active and healthy lifestyles, and bringing communities together. “When the Greens in the Scottish Parliament first proposed the Climate Challenge Fund, we were confident we'd see imaginative and ground-breaking applications of this sort, but the number and quality of applications have exceeded even our high expectations." "The fund has awarded around £12m so far, to 157 community projects across the country, and the doors are open for other groups with good ideas to come forward, even if those ideas are still at an early stage. “The process is as straight forward as possible, and there's plenty of advice and support available. I'd urge anyone who can see ways their community could reduce its carbon footprint to go online and find out more about how to apply." Notes 1. The Climate Challenge Fund is a joint project between the Greens and Scottish Ministers, and will distribute £27.4m in funding up to 2011. The Fund was established through the 2008 budget, and is designed to support innovative and locally-led projects to cut carbon emissions and build sustainable communities.
