Dalai Lama
Tue., April 22, 2008. 15:00.
Greens welcome Dalai Lama's wish to become a party member.
"If you have a Green Party (in this country), I want to join," the 14th Dalai Lama said this week in a Michigan lecture (1) on conservation and World Earth Day. He also discussed the core principles of the international environmental movement, saying that "taking care of our planet's environment is like taking care of our own home. We have a responsibility to take care of the environment. It is our only home."
Scottish Green Party Co-convener Robin Harper MSP said: "The Dalai Lama has been a regular visitor to Holyrood over the years, and I'm delighted to hear he wants to join the Greens. This is the most high-profile endorsement ever for the international green movement.
"As the world's attention rightly focuses on the problems in Tibet, it is a testament to the Dalai Lama's broader vision that he in turn continues to look at international environmental problems, and used World Earth Day to raise awareness of climate change. In his talk he also emphasised the vital role of environmental education in our schools, and I could not agree more; the future of our planet will be determined in our classrooms as much as in our parliaments."
