Dignity of young Scots with disabilities must be paramount
Today's report from Kathleen Marshall, Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, sets out the distressing situation that young Scots with disabilities find themselves in with respect to policy and practice on moving and handling. In particular, they are often treated as an afterthought when decisions are made that affect their lives, excluded from school trips, and moved "like cargo". (1)
Robin Harper MSP said:
"The true test of any society is how it cares for and respects its most vulnerable. All too often, this report shows, there is conflict between the needs of young Scots with disabilities and the moving and handling policies that affect them. We need to see a consistent approach that puts their needs first across Scotland."
