Publication of People & Planet Universities Green League 2009

Greens welcomed the publication today of the People & Planet Universities Green League 2009, which turns the tables on the Universities and marks them on their environmental credentials. The University of Edinburgh is the highest-ranked Scottish university, three places ahead of the University of Glasgow. Green MSP Patrick Harvie has today lodged a Parliamentary motion commending the students and staff who have worked hard across at universities to improve their environmental record, and urging them on for future years.

Patrick Harvie MSP said:

"Universities have always helped lead the way in Scotland. In the fight against climate change, they are crucial in showing us how things can be done. The People & Planet Green League is therefore a great way of seeing how successful universities have been on this issue and spurring them to further action. Today's results show that, overall, Scotland's universities are improving, but they certainly could do better.

"Students are amongst the most green-minded groups in society, and Universities which demonstrate real commitment in this area are likely to see real benefits in terms of recruitment and the enthusiasm of their student body. Academic league tables will remain an important guide for applicants, but the Universities Green League has become an increasingly important benchmark too."
