In 2003, Patrick Harvie was elected as Glasgow's first Green representative.

With 7.5% of the vote, well clear of their nearest rivals and only a few hundred votes short of overtaking the Liberal Democrats and the Tories. The Green share of the vote increased further in the 2004 European elections.

Patrick and Rosemary say

Since devolution began in 1999 Green MSPs from across Scotland have been working to promote our distinctive vision for the country’s future. It’s one based on strong values of freedom and equality, strong communities which address the needs of everyone in society, and strong action in the face of the daunting challenge our generation faces from climate change and environmental damage. We have punched well above our weight, holding the Scottish Executive to account for its action – and inaction – on the issues which face our society.

On May 3rd you can help us take another step toward a fairer Greener society. With so many people tired of voting for stale politics and the ‘devil you know’ parties, the Greens are poised to make gains and exercise real influence in Scottish politics just as our colleagues have across Europe.

As Glasgow’s first green politician, Patrick has gained recognition for combining his work on civil liberties and social issues with persistent campaigning to protect green spaces in the city, and to improve the public transport system instead of throwing money at more road-building. This year we hope to elect a second Green MSP for the city, in order that we can do twice as much to bring about a greener, safer Glasgow and a fairer, more equitable society.

Increasingly people can see that the Greens are the only party combining commitment to serious politics with the radical edge that’s missing from the mainstream. If you want a Greener, cleaner Glasgow, First Vote Green.
