Fix the bridge, save billions

The Scottish Green Party is currently the only Parliamentary party arguing for the existing Forth Road Bridge to be repaired, rather than building a new bridge for a starting price of £2,300m.

The cables on the Forth Road Bridge have been deteriorating. They are now being dried out, and information expected next year will establish how successful that has been.

Even if this measure does not work, installing a new cable would cost a maximum of £122m, a small fraction of the cost.

Nevertheless, the other parties have united around a call for the new road bridge, and appear prepared to waste billions of pounds of taxpayers' money just as pressure on the Scottish budget grows.

The Scottish Green Party is a member of the Forthright Alliance which campaigns for the existing Forth Road Bridge to be repaired and against an unnecessary new bridge.

"There's still time for Scottish Ministers to see sense and fix the existing bridge for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the disruption."
