North Kelvin Meadow
The Scottish Green Party supports the North Kelvin Meadow Campaign, a community group set up to campaign for the disused green space between Clouston Street and Kelbourne Street to be turned into a multi-use community green space for the people of Maryhill.
The North Kelvin Meadow had fallen into considerable disrepair, with vandalism, fly tipping and other crime. Earlier that year, Glasgow City Council rejected a survey of local residents which supported the conversion of the former playing fields into green space. The Council still plans to sell the land to a property developer for the creation of 115 flats, which many local residents oppose because the area is already densely populated and has significant traffic problems.
In October 2008 Glasgow City Council passed a motion from Green Councillor Nina Baker to use vacant spaces in the city as temporary parks for the public, exactly as has been done by local residents in this case.
Sadly, In August 2009 the campaign was taken to court by the Council, and two key activists were banned from installing batboxes and raised beds for fruit and vegetables. An eviction order is now also hanging over the Meadow, but the community have not given up.
They hold regular events at the Meadow, including a bat box day which Patrick Harvie helped out at. You can find out more at the campaign website.
The area is also represented by Green Councillor Kieran Wild, who has worked through the Council to try and protect the Meadow. Local residents who are concerned about the Council's activities or who want to support the campaign can also contact him.
